The Kentucky Golf Association is recognized as the governing body for amateur golf in the Commonwealth. It is an organization comprised of over 200 member clubs and courses throughout Kentucky, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of representatives from facilities from across Kentucky. The Kentucky Golf Association serves and fulfills many roles for golf in Kentucky.
Kentucky Golf Family: The Kentucky Golf Association works closely with Kentucky’s other governing bodies to promote and protect the game in Kentucky. The Kentucky Golf Association, Kentucky Section PGA, and the Kentucky Senior Golf Association are all housed under one roof and served by a single staff. This kind of cooperative effort, which benefits all of golf in Kentucky, exists in only three states.
The KGA and the USGA: The KGA is charged with governing, promoting, and protecting amateur golf in Kentucky, and enjoys a close relationship with the United States Golf Association in pursuit of accomplishing this mission. The KGA annually conducts qualifying events for a number of USGA competitions, administers a statewide handicap system in accordance with USGA guidelines, provides course rating services in accordance with USGA guidelines, administers the Rules of Amateur status on behalf of the USGA, and enjoys support from USGA staff and committee members in areas such as the Rules of Golf, Handicapping, and Course Rating.
Competitions: The KGA conducts four competitions annually, among them the Kentucky State Amateur Championship, which was first conducted in 1911, along with qualifying rounds for a number of USGA Championships.
Handicapping: The KGA, in cooperation with the Kentucky PGA, is proud to offer the USGA’s Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN), the largest handicapping service in the world, to the golfers of Kentucky. Currently, over 200 facilities in Kentucky utilize this important service.
Official Course Rating & Measurement: Equity in the handicap system begins with each golf course rated against all others. The KGA oversees course rating and ensures that USGA guidelines are followed and met.
Rules of Golf: KGA staff is available to assist clubs and individual members with Rules of Golf questions, and conducts Rules of Golf workshops throughout Kentucky each year.
Amateur Status: The KGA serves as a source of information on the Rules of Amateur Status. Applications for re-instatement to amateur status are available from and processed by the KGA.
Junior Golf: The KGA, along with the Kentucky PGA, administers and oversees the Pepsi Junior Golf Tour, featuring over 40 competitions annually. The Pepsi Tour has reached thousands of junior golfers since its inception, and has grown to also include the GeneratioNext Tour, the Mountain Dew Spring Series, and the Aqua Fina Fall Series.
Information Services: The KGA staff is well trained in various areas of golf administration, and is eager to be of assistance in these and other matters relating to the game. A toll-free number, (800) 254-2742, is available for members’ convenience.
